TPRM GUIDELINES

Summary
The CIHR Training Program in Regenerative Medicine (TPRM) offers students with exceptional academic performance from across Canada an opportunity to participate directly in medical/health research in regenerative medicine.  The objectives for the TPRM are:

  • To produce the next generation of scientists and highly qualified personnel to meet the needs of Canada and the international community’s healthcare and industry sectors.
  • To instil in trainees an interdisciplinary and team-based approach to the understanding and treatment of organ failure.
  • To develop and offer an innovative curriculum to support the development of well-rounded health researchers and personnel.
The CIHR Training Program in Regenerative Medicine consists of the following:
  • A graduate course in regenerative medicine (registration for Credit/Audit within the year funded);
  • Participation and attendance at select workshops/seminars offered by the TPRM and its partnering institutions;
  • Fellowship Funding in support of candidate’s regenerative medicine research with TPRM supervisor(s)/mentor(s);
  • Attendance at Visiting Lecture Speakers Series (4);
  • Attendance at Annual Regenerative Medicine Symposium;
  • TPRM retreats (where available) and yearly progress reporting to CIHR and program supporters.
Eligibility
Applicants must be registered in a Canadian graduate degree program relevant to the objectives of the TPRM program and be studying in a medical or health-related field.  A student registered in an M.D. program that may already hold an undergraduate or graduate degree may also apply.  Trainees who are currently in their last term of their graduate degree; who have applied either to Medical School or for a post doctoral fellowship that would start within the funding period must express this detail in their application.TPRM supervisors sponsoring candidates to this program must have a record of productive research and sufficient funding to ensure the satisfactory conduct of the research.  A separate research project must be submitted for each student. The supervisor must be prepared to provide direct and continuous supervision during the term of the award.

Terms of Fellowship

Acceptance into the TPRM fellowship is for a minimum one year period for Graduate and Post Graduate Trainees (3 months for Undergraduate).

The regenerative medicine course is a requirement for any recipient of the TPRM fellowship award.  Graduate students must enrol in the course for credit, whereas Post Doctoral Fellows must audit the course.  Failure to register in the course during your program period will result in withdrawal of your training fellowship award.  More information on the course is available at www.regenmedcanda.com and www.ims.utoronto.ca/courses/description/msc7000y.htm .

Students must be willing to participate in a regenerative medicine research project for the duration of the award and agree not to change supervisor and/or project during the term of the award.

The award component will provide funds to the sponsoring institution in the care of the TPRM mentor/supervisor to be used as a stipend for the period of the award.The TPRM will not notify the candidates directly and notification is provided on the TPRM website. Candidates will also be informed by their sponsoring supervisor regarding the outcome of their submission.

TPRM Award Stipend
TPRM awards are set based on
CIHR Guidelines.

Renewals
TPRM awards are renewable; however, it is the responsibility of the student to apply for renewals.

Acknowledgement
Support for research by an Agency grant is an investment by Canadian taxpayers. The Agencies' accountability regarding this use of grant funds includes informing the public about who receives the support, the type of research that will be conducted and how funds will be administered.
Trainees are required to acknowledge the Training Program in publications arising from the supported research, and in conference or congress materials.  The TPRM logo is available on the website for this purpose. Acknowledgement should read CIHR Training Program in Regenerative Medicine or CIHR Grant STP #53882.

Reporting
Students and supervisors will be required to submit a final report to the TPRM upon completion of the award period. This information is used for yearly progress reports which are submitted to CIHR and TPRM’s partnering institutions.
